How Kindness Changed Mohamoud’s Life

26 August 2026

“Everyone I’ve met here has been so kind.”
Mohamoud
Mission client and student at our MCAO Stepping Stones Learning Centre

Mohamoud is thankful for the kindness that’s helped him build a better life. He’s now found affordable housing and shares a comfortable apartment with two roommates. He’s back in school, planning to pursue a career in the trades. He’s exploring Ottawa, loving the beauty of our city and its surrounding regions.

The kindness he’s received all started with you.

Your support of The Ottawa Mission gave him access to the vital lifelines of food and shelter after he left challenging times behind in Somalia. Like we do for every client, once Mohamoud entered our shelter, we got to work on helping him make his exit.

Two Mission caseworkers, Shad and Mack, worked to obtain all the identification and paperwork needed before helping him search for his future apartment.

In the meantime, Mohamoud took the initiative to attend our MCA Ottawa Stepping Stones Learning Centre’s (SSLC) English Club, joining fellow shelter clients and community members in regularly learning and practicing English.

Mohamoud also accessed critical healthcare at our DYMON Health Clinic, located next to our shelter. Having felt ‘off’ for a long time, he was referred to the clinic by our Frontline team. Blood test revealed that his symptoms were related to undiagnosed diabetes. Now receiving the medication he needs, Mohamoud is healthy and back to his normal self!

These all add up to the wraparound supports you provided to Mahamoud, and that you continue to make possible for so many of our clients. Food, shelter, housing supports, education, healthcare, job training, addiction counselling, spiritual care, and more, all work together to help people build healthier, more stable lives and, ultimately, find sustainable pathways out of homelessness.

Reflecting on the services, resources, and perhaps, most importantly, the kindness he received at The Mission, Mohamoud shares with a soft smile:

“I’d like to thank all who support The Ottawa Mission. You have helped me out so very much.
