FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK
A BANQUET FOR ALL
The Christmas season is often bittersweet at The Ottawa Mission. It’s hard to witness people struggling, many of whom will face the holidays and the coming New Year alone. On the other hand, it’s heartwarming to see our caring and compassionate volunteers, donors and staff go above and beyond the call of duty to bring comfort and joy to those who have no other place to be.
This year, like past years, the smell of roast turkey will fill the hallways as our kitchen prepares for our annual Christmas dinner, one of my favourite events of the year. We are preparing to welcome hundreds from the community who, for one reason or another, find themselves in need and unable to make their own Christmas dinner. Sometimes that need is simply for hope and compassion.
When I talk to people at this special holiday event, I’m reminded of one of my favorite bible verses – Luke 14:12-14. “When you host a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the disabled, the blind, and you will be blessed.”
I feel truly blessed to be a part of The Ottawa Mission and on behalf of everyone who will enjoy the delicious turkey dinner and fellowship in our dining room, I thank you for your support. You too are a part of this special place, and your gift of hope will help so many people find their way.
Have a blessed Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!
