Beating the summer heat

For people who are homeless, the heat of summer is equally as challenging as the cold of winter. That’s why our Front Line teams at The Ottawa Mission routinely patrol the streets around the shelter on hot days handing out cold bottles of water to those in need.

This year, in addition to the water, we are once again trying to encourage people to spend time inside The Mission where there is air conditioning. Our “Cool Off Days” as we call them, began in our dining room again last week.

On these designated days, people are invited to get together in the early afternoon – between our regular meal services – to enjoy cooling treats, games and camaraderie. This week, it’s movies and watermelon! For many, this is a welcome and comforting diversion during the long hot days of summer.

For those who participate in “Cool Off Days” and those who don’t, having access to cold water remains very important, and we could use your help with that. If you are interested in donating bottled water during the summer months, you can either drop it by 35 Waller Street anytime during the day or give us a call at 613-234-1144 to make other arrangements. Thank you in advance!
