Teacher at Stepping Stones Learning Centre

Denyse has been involved in alternative education since earning her Education degree many years ago. She knows the power of learning and how it can change lives.

Denyse says she became a teacher in part to return the favor of those who tenaciously believed in her and inspired her when she didn’t believe in herself. Denyse heads up The Ottawa Mission’s Stepping Stones Learning Centre – a unique space open to adult men and women looking for educational support.

People from all walks of life come into the small classroom with seating for about 10 people – some are looking for help with basic literacy and others want to improve their French, upgrade their high school, prepare for their GED and/or take post-secondary online courses through accredited colleges and universities.

“They don’t have to come in every day”, says Denyse, “but I do ask that they make a commitment to giving a certain amount of time every week to their educational goal.” Her goal is to help students learn their own value—especially those who may feel unwanted and disconnected from a sense of belonging, community, and family.

Denyse states that her students inspire her to teach beyond the classroom walls; to allow them opportunities that exhilarate them to learn. She adds that each of them at different times has taught her more then she could ever teach them.
