Position Purpose
The Maintenance Service Training Program (MSTP) is a training program made available to unemployed, adult men and women from all backgrounds wishing to attain the necessary skills to work in commercial and residential buildings. The program offers a structured environment where the students learn, both practical and hands-on, professional skills and attitudes that will serve them for a lifetime.
Reporting to the Manager of Maintenance, the MSTP Coordinator is responsible for managing the full student journey from the recruiting and selection of students through to a professional worksite evaluation and certifying completion for graduation; which includes training and course work in the following areas:
- Health and Safety
- Minor Repairs & Maintenance
- Janitorial Work
- General Complex Care
- Property Maintenance Communication
He/she will play an integral role, in building partnerships with pertinent organizations (i.e., Property Management Companies, Builders, etc.) that hire Superintendents to secure work placement opportunities for each student.
The MSTP Coordinator must ensure compliance with applicable legislation, including Occupational Health & Safety.

Major Responsibilities
Program Coordination
- Oversee, in collaboration with the Manager, the recruitment, interviews and selection of potential students
- Organize the ordering of student supplies at the start of each session (i.e., backpacks, workbooks, stationary supplies, uniforms, tools, etc.)
- Design, delivery and evaluation of new student orientation/onboarding
- Record and track time-keeping and attendance
- Monitor the participation of each student and take corrective action when required
- Design and establish, in collaboration with the Manager, a series of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Daily huddle with students to plan day; Friday huddle to debrief the week
- Weekly meetings with each student and the Manager to discuss progress and potential obstacles that they may face
- Oversee organizing and participating in the students’ graduation & community celebration
- Completing follow-up assessments with the students for a 6-month period after graduation, to keep in contact with them and provide any needed support
Program Delivery
- Prepare an introduction and demonstration for each training item (TI) in each of the training units (TU) which make up the approved training standard (TS) including tool identification and usage
- Shuttle students in a work vehicle to the main building for lunch daily
- Arrange enrolment in, or delivery of, required certification courses, both virtual and in-person (i.e.,1st Aid, WHMIS, etc.)
- Design and prepare a variety of learning activities and experiences that meet the training item outcomes within the standard; this may include partnering with stakeholders inside/outside of The Ottawa Mission
- Assist to organize and support the student’s end of module quizzes/tests; mark and record results
- Network with community employers and source job placements and opportunities for students
Health & Safety
- Ensure Health & Safety is always a priority
- Ensure all Ottawa Mission Health & Safety policies and procedures are adhered to, ensuring corrective action when needed
- Become trainer for courses that are vital to the program (i.e., WHMIS, Lockout / Tag out, etc.)
- Ensure students are taught to use tools safely and properly
Miscellaneous
- Work closely with collaborating partners and stakeholders including; Industrial Safety Trainers, Manor Park Community Centre, etc.
- Completion of the Certified Competency Development Practitioner (CCDP) training standard
- Other duties as required
Other Requirements
Education
- College Diploma in a related field or combination of relevant experience
- Knowledge of and/or training in WHMIS, Close Confinement, Fire Safety, First Aid/CPR considered assets
Experience
- Combination of experience in training/facilitation/workshops and/or the trades/building maintenance
- Experience in an administrative/coordinating role
- Experience in the field of Trades or Site Superintendent considered an asset
Qualifications
- Understanding of Trades and how Construction Projects are organized and implemented
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings/weekends, to accommodate the needs of the program (i.e., Donor Events, Community Engagement, etc.)
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain community partnerships
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Ability to work with patience and understanding
- Must have a valid G Driver’s License with a clean abstract
- Bilingualism (English & French) an asset
Working Conditions
- High degree of physical activity involving: walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, bending, lifting, driving
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Must be comfortable working in a challenging environment that has the potential for confrontation and/or exposure to violence
